In recent years, there’s been an increase in the number of people who consume CBD in some way or another. The legalization of hemp farming in 2018 definitely contributed to it, as up until that point, the hemp plant was part of the legal definition of marijuana included in the Controlled Substances Act.

However, while there’s no denying that the 2018 Farm Bill played a part in it’s popularity, probably the most significant impact was caused by the number of potential health benefits that became associated with CBD, which is the main component of the hemp plant.

Mind you, while the matter definitely needs more research, as it is still quite a new development, what we’ve seen so far has been enough for people to purchase CBD products and give them a go.

Many people are still hesitant to try it because they aren’t sure how it works, or they have negative connotations with hemp because of how often it is confused with marijuana.

Are they actually the same thing? How can you consume hemp? Can you smoke it? Will it get you high? These are all questions that will be answered below.

Hemp vs. Marijuana

First thing first, let’s talk about hemp and marijuana. Are they the same thing? The answer is no – at least when it comes to the legal definitions of both.

Both hemp and marijuana are part of the same plant family. The difference between them is in their components. According to the law, a hemp plant is a plant that contains less than 0.3% of THC. A marijuana plant, on the other hand, is a plant that contains more than 0.3% of THC – usually it’s about 15 to 20%. Hemp plants are mostly used to derive CBD, although other parts, such as hemp seeds are also used.

How to consume hemp?

There are many ways in which you can consume hemp – which one you will choose all depends solely on your personal preference.

The first way, and probably the most popular one, is by using CBD products – while it’s not exactly using the hemp, as you’re using one of its compounds, it’s still probably the most beneficial way to take advantage of hemp’s alleged health benefits. There are plenty of products now available that contain CBD, including CBD oil, CBD edibles such as CBD gummies, CBD capsules, CBD topicals and more.

The second way in which you can consume hemp is by using the seeds. You can add them to almost anything you eat – they’re a great nutrition boost. They can be added to your smoothies, sprinkled on your salad, cereals or avocado toast, or used in raw bars and balls. If you can’t eat gluten, they can be used instead of breadcrumbs, and if you don’t mind putting in a bit of work, you can turn your hemp plant seeds into hemp milk.

When looking for the seeds, keep in mind that the ones you need are the hulled hemp seeds, also known as hemp hearts.

Other Ways to Consume Hemp

Another way to consume hemp is hemp seeds oil – not to be mistaken with CBD oil. CBD oils are made from the stalks, flowers and leaves of hemp plants. Hemp oil, on the other hand, is made from the seeds.

Just like raw seeds, hemp oil is great for your health and wellness, as it contains lots of healthy polyunsaturated fats while also being low in saturated fats. If you have some hemp seeds laying around, then you’ll probably be glad to hear that you can easily make hemp oil at home – there are plenty of instructions on how to do it online.

Last but not least, you can look for hemp protein powder, which is made from seeds that have been pressed and then ground into a powder. Again, it is a good nutritional boost, as it contains all the essential amino acids that cannot be produced by the body and that must come from food.

Now, let’s move on to what you probably opened this article for – can hemp be consumed in some other way, for example, by smoking?

Can you smoke hemp?

Yes, you can smoke hemp – however, before you do, you need to learn more about it, as not all parts of the plant should be smoked.

Smoking hemp should only be done by smoking the hemp flower or the leaves (the hemp flower is more potent than the leaves). Other parts, such as the seeds, roots or stalks shouldn’t be smoked. That’s because not all of the parts contain CBD, and therefore they either don’t provide the same effects or the effects are less intense than when you’re smoking CBD-rich parts of the hemp plant.

How do you smoke hemp?

There are a few different ways in which you can smoke hemp.

First of all, you can make a joint out of it. It’s actually very easy to roll one, but if you don’t know how to do it, there are plenty of tutorials online. You can also invest in a rolling machine that will do the job for you. Additionally, you can add some more herbs to your joint – some of the most popular choices include tobacco, dried rose petals or damiana.

Secondly, you can vape it. To do it, you will need a special device – a dried herb vape. It will heat up the CBD hemp flower enough so that the active ingredients become vaporized, but it won’t cause combustion.

Finally, you can smoke hemp flowers using a bong or a pipe – all you have to do is grind the flower up, and then add it to the bowl. If you want to bring down the intensity of the flower, you can always add some other herbs to it, such as mullein.

Smoking Hemp and Getting High

The simple answer to the question of whether smoking hemp will get you high is no. That’s because, as we already mentioned, the hemp plant, contrary to the marijuana plant, does not contain the psychoactive compound known as THC, or if it does, it is almost undetectable.

And since THC is what produces the feeling of relaxation and all the other symptoms of a high, smoking hemp which doesn’t contain it, simply cannot provide the psychoactive effects.

Now, let’s set one thing straight – hemp-derived CBD can contain THC, especially if we’re talking about a full-spectrum or broad-spectrum CBD (even though it is less likely for a broad-spectrum to contain it). However, the amount that is there is not enough to get you high as, according to federal law, a CBD product cannot contain more than 0.3% of THC.

So, how does hemp make you feel if you don’t get high?

Well, instead of experiencing a feeling of euphoria or impaired judgment that usually comes from being high, smoking hemp makes you feel relaxed and calm. It works almost immediately, as the first effects of CBD can be felt even 15 minutes after smoking – now, keep in mind that this is the case for smoking and using CBD sublingually. If you use CBD in the form of an edible or a topical product, it might take between one to two hours for you to start feeling its effects.

What are the benefits of smoking hemp?

You might be wondering – There are so many other ways to consume hemp and take advantage of the CBD it contains, why should I smoke it? We’re more than happy to answer that question – there are actually quite a few reasons for that – let us name the most important ones:

  • you can feel the effects of CBD faster than with other methods – as we’ve already mentioned above, smoking hemp, in particular, the part that is filled with CBD (flower) is actually one of the fastest ways to feel the effects and the therapeutic benefits that come with smoking hemp. After all, it only takes about 15 to 20 minutes, while with other methods, the CBD can take up to one to two hours to work.
  • the CBD enters your system faster – when you smoke hemp, the CBD enters your body through your airways and goes into your lungs, from where it has an easier entryway into your bloodstream. Because it doesn’t need to go through the digestive system or through your liver, it doesn’t need to be broken down or metabolized by it.
  • you’ll take advantage of all the components of the hemp plant – smoking hemp provides you with the same components as you would when taking full-spectrum CBD. Although it hasn’t been confirmed, it is said that this type of CBD is more potent than pure CBD.

How does CBD get absorbed into my body when I smoke hemp?

The CBD enters your body through the respiratory system from which it enters the bloodstream. Once the CBD is in your blood, it will travel throughout your body to various receptors that are part of the ECS (endocannabinoid system).

The endocannabinoid system is made of three main elements – the receptors, the enzymes and the endocannabinoid which are present in different parts of your body. Together, they help keep your body in balance, the phenomenon also known as homeostasis.

Can I start smoking hemp without consulting a doctor?

Technically you can. However, if you take any medication or have any health issues, it is always a good idea to clear it with your doctor first.

Will smoking hemp result in a positive drug test?

The short answer is no. While hemp contains both CBD and THC, the amount of THC that is present in it is not enough to result in a positive drug test. Also, drug tests are meant to detect THC and not CBD, which is the main compound of hemp.

Now, the matter looks a bit different when we’re talking about CBD products. It’s important that they have been tested by a third party and that you purchase them from reliable sources – otherwise, you might end up in a situation where the amount of THC written on the label is different from what is in the actual product.

If that happens, then yes, you can receive a positive drug test – however, that’s still not because of CBD but because of a higher than stated amount of THC.

Another thing is the frequency with which you smoke hemp flowers or consume CBD in another way – the more you use it, the higher the chances of THC building up and appearing on the drug test. However, still, as we emphasized a few times, getting a positive drug test is an extremely rare occurrence.

Is smoking hemp legal?

Yes, smoking hemp is federally legal. As we already mentioned, because of the 2018 Farm Bill, also known as Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 hemp farming was made legal and removed it from the legal definition of marijuana which was included in the Controlled Substances Act.

Can I get addicted to CBD?

According to the World Health Organization, there is no evidence that would suggest that you can get addicted to CBD.

How can I stay safe when buying hemp to smoke?

There are many companies that sell hemp flowers that you can smoke – however, not all of them will be of good quality. That’s why you need to learn how to purchase the right hemp products.

First of all, always buy products from reliable companies that have a good reputation and that are known for the quality of their products. Secondly, it’s better to purchase hemp flowers that have been tested by a third party. Finally, if you can, always check the reviews of both the product and the company.

The bottom line when it comes to smoking hemp

As the years go by, more and more people decide to give hemp and CBD a go. It shouldn’t come as a surprise though, considering how many potential health benefits are already associated with CBD – and while it is true that more research is needed to confirm them 100%, what we’ve seen already is definitely promising.

While most decide to use CBD oil, it is not the only way to get the component into your body – smoking hemp is also an option that actually works better for many.

So, can you smoke hemp? As we said a few times already, yes! You can easily start taking CBD by smoking hemp. Can smoking hemp flowers get you high? Now that would be a no – smoking hemp doesn’t get you high.

Hopefully this article has given you a better understanding about smoking hemp. And please remember. If you take any medication or have any health issues, contact your doctor before taking hemp. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
